Often the smallest unexpected surprises garner the most demanding dilemmas, which proves to be the ordeal that entomologist Ben Whytten faces. While netting butterflies to add to his vast collection, he mistakenly sweeps what he thinks is the most spectacular butterfly he has ever seen into his net. Upon examining his catch, Ben is horrified to discover he has captured a faery and shredded her delicate wings into useless ribbons.
Devastated, Ben vows to take Shawndirea back to her realm, Aetheaon; but he discovers that doing so places their lives into immediate danger. To get to Aetheaon, they must pass through a portal rift deep inside the haunted cavern, Devils Den.
Once they cross the rift, Ben enters a world where mysteries, magic, betrayal, and power struggles await. He must adapt quickly or die because Aetheaon is filled with enchanted creatures and numerous races where chaos often dominates order. And since Shawndirea's destined for the throne of Elvendale, opposing dark forces plot to prevent her from ever reaching her kingdom again. The faery's magic isn't enough to fully protect them, so he must trust other adventurers to aid them during their journey.

Having read Leonard D. Hilley's book, Devil's Den, I was especially excited to read the prequel. The story sweeps you up from the very beginning and takes you on an epic whirlwind journey with a very diverse group of characters, some more likable than others. I really love the chemistry between Ben and Shawndirea. Leonard D. Hilley has created a world that's full of danger and very intriguing.Ben is a very gentle, kind and honorable man who accidentally damages the wings of Shawndirea, a faerie full of magic, strength and beauty. The two compliment each other in many ways and I found myself pulling for them at every turn, every obstacle, every challenge thrown their way. This dark fantasy is so masterfully told, you can't help but lose yourself in the pages. Evil, light, magic, elves, dwarves, sword battles and barroom fights, this book is full of surprises and will keep you guessing until the end! I eagerly await the next book in the series!

Shawndirea Chronicles of Aetheaon Book One (Audible Audio Edition) Leonard D Hilley II Darla Middlebrook DeimosWeb Publishing Books Reviews
When Ben, an entomologist, captures the best butterfly he’s ever seen, he doesn't realize that he is about to embark on a mind bending adventure. The insect he’s captured isn't a butterfly at all…it’s a fairy named Shawndirea and she needs to get back home to Aetheaon. But getting her there isn't easy, and along the way Ben and Shawndirea have to do battle with a series of creatures and otherworldly obstacles that people Elvendale, the realm where Shawndirea was born and where she is destined to rule. If the forces arrayed against her can be overcome, that is.
This is, in many ways, an old fashioned fantasy, in the vein of The Hobbit. And just like in that classic fantasy, Shawndirea Chronicles of Aetheaon is about another world filled with fairies and wizards and elves and magic. It reminded me of a fairytale made for adults…in the best sense of the world fairytale. Pure escapism, an exciting plot, and immersion into another land. If you’re a fan of fantasy epics and adventure novels, you’ll like this one. Highly recommended.
Marvelous is the first word that comes to mind when thinking about “Shawndirea; Chronicals of Aetheaon. I was engulfed in this story for a whole week straight. The book was about an entomologist/professor by the name of Ben Whytten who lived a very private life. He captured rare butterflies and insects to add to his extensive collection, until one life changing day. The day that he caught Shawndirea, the most beautiful specimen that he had ever seen. From the moment he first saw her, he became a new man with a new purpose in life. He only desired to know more about this beautiful fairy and to keep her safe. When he trapped her in his net, he mistakenly damaged her wing, destroying her ability to fly. With deep remorse, he vowed to get her back home safely without regards to the danger he was signing up for. From the moment that he found her, Bens life was in danger because of evil dark forces that were out to get her. Starting with his colleague Deiko who was mentally possessed to murder Ben and steal Shawndirea, to a host of demons, ghost, devils, extreme weather, and mystical creatures, Ben was in grave danger. Even though he was warned multiple times by Shawndirea about what terror that lurked ahead Ben, choose to face anything in his path to get her home. He is also faced with the wrath of her mother Queen Istrell, Fairy Queen of Evendale who hated humans with a passion.
Will he be able to save her?
Will he be able to bring peace to a disastrous mystical land?
Read the book to find out. You will go on a wonderful adventure that maybe even you will not want to return form.
Epic, expansive fantasy – the kind that dares you to break out the dice, draw a map and immerse yourself in a DM’s nightmare is almost lacking these days. Oh, we have fantasy, some of it quite good, but the elves, faeries, witches and magic of our youth has been changed, or is offered up in smaller doses than your die hard fantasy addict can tolerate.
Enter “Shawndirea Chronicles of Aetheaon Book one” by Leonard D. Hilley II. This massive volume is the answer to the jittery cravings you and your fellow fantasy lovers have been suffering from, and very possibly the beginning of a new addiction.
Ben Whytten, a rather reclusive biologist and Professor, finds his life turned upside down when a routine butterfly gathering expedition awards him something far greater, and rarer than a beautiful insect. At the bottom of Ben’s net, with iridescent, damaged wings, lays a faery. Stunningly beautiful, dainty and hurt, her presence steals his breath and strips away all the things he ‘thought’ he knew before. Suddenly faced with a this mythical creature, he knows he has to save her, a drive that just increases when she awakens – despite her mistrust of him. Shawndirea, a faery from another realm, needs to get home to use her magic to heal herself, and the only one that can get her there, to the land of Aetheaon, is Ben.
So begins a heroic tale that spans lands and stretches the imagination. What should be a quick jaunt through a haunted cave (a portal to the other realm) turns into an adventure worth your time. Detailed and lengthy, this is a book that will entrance and capture you – pulling you in as Ben dodges zealous colleagues, witches, demons and more. A five star on the Fantasy Scale.
