UGH!?! Not Another Diversity Book Justin LaKyle Brown Books
I have the pleasure of knowing Justin on a personal level, but not professional. This book helps to understand not only who Justin is, but what he does. Anyone who knows Justin can tell this book is written exactly how he speaks- it's like having a full conversation sitting across the table from him. This gives the reader the gift of perspective... a rarity!First off, a little background.... I am a special education teacher in the Bronx dealing mainly with Emotionally Disturbed children. I am a white woman from an affluent suburb... every one of my students are African American or Hispanic. Many live in shelters. Many are in foster care. We have children who moved here legally, and others who were hidden in the back of a truck. The staff at my school ranges from every background. We have strong women in the highest positions. We have high school students trying to earn their GED's because they were incarcerated. We have children with Autism from the "nice" areas and children labeled as MR. We have children who identify as the opposite sex, and teens who are attracted to the same sex. The point of this is -I picked up this book thinking what is this guy going to teach me about diversity?!
Well the fact is- it taught me everything about diversity. It taught me that as an educator I must try to expand my students' minds to not only be open to me but to others too, even to those they haven't met. My kids learn to trust me, but reading this book made me question if that trust is extending outward. Upon implementing some of the activities, it became clear that we are more alike than different.... and we took the time to have open conversations to explore WHY. This book provides a forum for honesty and urges us all to stop hiding behind our (sometimes unnoticed) judgements. It makes you question am I really doing enough with the talents I have been given?! If not, how can I be stretched in order to help stretch the minds of those around me?
I encourage anyone reading this to give Justin's book a try because he is someone to stand with - even if you are standing on opposite sides of the line ;)

UGH!?! Not Another Diversity Book Justin LaKyle Brown Books Reviews
This book is amazing. Are you ready to have your paradigm make a shift? The author's perspective on many of today's "hot topics" has challenged me to take a look at my own views. What are some of my own prejudices? How do I deal with diversity in the workplace? Am I open to change? Get ready for this thought-provoking and poignant dialogue with the author ...if you dare! Brown has a witty way of drawing the reader into his experiences and making you feel apart of the conversation.
As a former educator I would highly recommend Justin Brown's book. This talented and dynamic author composed a brilliant text about diversity that was inspiring, funny, interactive and kept my attention. Not only does Justin educate us, he actually will place you in his book as you will identify with the some of the simplest and complex examples of diversity. This book is contagious!!! I would definitely recommend this book as a must for high school and college courses. Not only are the examples realistic but the author also offers real solutions in such a way all can understand. Justin poured his passion into this book right into my hands. Brilliant!!
Great book! Well written.
10/10 would recommend for anyone trying to think about diversity like never before. A great book written by a great guy!
A powerful insight into some real dilemnas of today's society and college campuses nationwide. Justin delivers raw perspectives and feedback from his experiences, programs, and research. A must read for self-reflection and improvement. Thumbs up!
I thought this book was very stimulating and thought provoking. It provided different perspectives on sensitive and controversial topics and leaves the reader thinking after each chapter. I would recommend this book to friends/family. It would be good for a course in college or grad school. Well done.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to participate in authentic conversation about diversity. The author uses his experience spark conversations that are consistently avoided in higher education and cooperate America. The best part of this book is that you, as the reader, can feel part of the experience. The book not only provides you with an outlook of an African American male working in an higher education, but also someone who can be your friend or colleague. Start reading, start thinking, join the conversation.
